Organic Crib Sheets- Better for Baby and the Environment

Babies and young toddlers can be just as sensitive to certain textures as adults can and sometimes even more than us because their skin is so delicate. Thankfully, there are organically-made crib sheets that you can get your hands on to prevent your baby from being uncomfortable as they sleep. High-quality sheets are easy to spot if you know what you are looking for.

To help you out, we put together this quick and easy guide that you can use to find the best one for you as well as some organic crib sheets that we have tried ourselves and can recommend.

Why Should I Buy Organic Crib Sheets

Most eco-friendly sheets are free of chemicals and are naturally hypoallergenic, making them safer and softer than other sheets out there. Chemical-free sheets also mean that your baby won’t experience sensitivity or allergic reactions to the sheets.

Sheets that are not organically made could contain chemical residues from pesticides, insecticides, dyes, formaldehyde and many other types of chemicals. They could also have needed added chemicals to grow the product or manufacture it. For example, cotton uses 30% of the world’s pesticides and some sheets can use up to 8000 different chemicals in the production process. Pesticides can cause a range of health issues such as memory issues, depression, paralysis and can compromise the immune system. These are very good reasons why we should only be purchasing organic sheets for us and our babies.

How To Choose The Best Cot Sheets

Material

There are many different types of material that sheets are usually made from:

Organic Cotton– Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides making them safer for us and baby. Make sure that they are certified organic.  Cotton is soft, has good insulation properties and absorbs moisture well. Most sheets are made using cotton.

Bamboo– Bamboo is a renewable and responsibly sourced product that grows extremely quickly. It also doesn’t require pesticides which means fewer chemicals on your baby’s body. Bamboo sheets are extremely soft, breathable and don’t trap excess heat. They are durable and last a long time.

Linen– Linen is made from flax fibers, and the process for turning flax into linen is eco-friendly. Pesticides aren’t used in the growing of flax plant but dyes are usually used in the process to give the sheets color so they can’t technically be called organic. Linen sheets feel soft and luxurious and are good at absorbing moisture. It has insulation properties that keep cool in summer and warm in winter. Linen is naturally hypoallergenic and antibacterial.

A tip is to get a thick set for winter and a thin one for summer to help keep your baby warm or cool enough.

The Fit

Sheets that wrap under the mattress are always easier to manage since they are less likely to be pulled out while your little one is tossing and turning. Some sheets may come with elastic bands to make sure that they stay snug on the mattress. Also make sure that you measure, or check the measurements of your mattress before you purchase your sheets. Most mattresses are only 9 inches thick, but there are a few that are a bit bigger or smaller, meaning the sheets may not fit.

Certification

Many of the eco-friendly sheets out there are organic, but there are some companies that use a processed plant fiber called rayon and then label them as organic. Thankfully, the Federal Trade Commission has been putting a stop to this, especially since these sheets can be exposed to chemicals while being made. To prevent children from getting sick, there are some organizations, like the Global Organix Textile Standards (GOTS), that test and certify sheets. Be sure to look out for certifications on your sheets but also do some added research to make sure that the product itself and the process it went through, didn’t involve any chemicals.

Wash Before Use

When you first get your sheets, it is a good idea to throw them in the wash to remove any smells or particles they may have from the packaging and soften them up with some fabric softener.

Once they are clean, fit them onto the bed so that they are snug; if you need or have elastic bands to make it snug, it can be a good idea for you to put them on with the mattress upright before laying it in the frame.

They mostly come in two packs, most either pink, blue, purple, or grey, and most of them complement each other rather than being completely different.

  • Can come in single or 2-packs

Cons

  • Are not certified
  • Can shrink if not washed according to the tag

Are They Worth It?

As a mother, you want the best for your child, and it can be hard to find and decide on which products will truly be the best for your little one. Choosing the right sheets means that your baby will be less susceptible to rashes and keep them comfortable.

My personal choice is the Pure Bamboo – Fitted Bamboo Sheets. While they are one of the more expensive options, they are also one of the higher-quality choices, have a certification for the material, can come in several colors, are hypoallergenic, and are long-lasting.

The fact that they hardly shrink, as long as you follow the washing instructions, is also an added benefit since it will make changing the sheets simple and easy without you needing an elastic band for the sheets.

Choosing the right sheets is essential for your baby considering that newborns can spend up to 17 hours a day sleeping in their crib. That s a lot of time up close and personal with their sheets so you want to make sure they’re safe and chemical-free.
